Bishop's Sacrifice

Contributed by W Hopkins

This is a photo I took for our studio assignment Paint With Light. The subject was a chess set from my house. The particular piece in the shot is a bishop with pawns and another bishop in background. For the Assignment we turned all the lights in the studio out and used a flashlight to light the subject. My aperture settings were at 4.2 and i used a shutter speed of 8.0 I made no color adjustments, and the only real editing I did was I clone stamped a distracting piece out of the middle right edge of the photo and I cropped it.

this is a very odd looking chess board lol. I like it, but not enough lighting in my opinion.

I love this chess picture. I love the way the light is reflecting on just one piece and fades out on to the other ones. It looks really cool.

Nice shot i like how that the Main subject is highlighted with the light. I can kinda tell that you did some clone stamping maybe come back and blur the area you did a little more. Cause everything in the back is blur except for that one area. Nice shot and great use of the light.

I really like the colors of the photo. I like the lighting and how the colors are all warm. I also like how the light is really only focused on the Bishop and how the Bishop is not in the very center of the screen. The photo was also really focused, you got a lot of detail in the main subject and I really like that. Overall it is a very good picture.

This picture is really good, it does look like you did edit it in photoshop, but you didnt, and thats the unique thing about this picture, Also another thing about this picture,is that you also blurred out the other pieces of the chessmaker and made the bishop, the main piece, but very good lighting, very good contrast, and the colors are just amazing, but very good work.

This is a really neat picture. I love the lighting and that the front piece stands out. I also like the solid background. Good Job.

this is a really neat picture. i like that only the subject is in focus & the background is blurred. & i think the lighting adds a really interesting element to it.

I like the mood this photo portrays. The lighting combined with the expression of the face makes the photo serious and intense. I really like the way the light is focused on one piece. The actual sharpness of the photo could have been improved though.

I like the idea for this shot and I think it was a good idea for a painting with light assignment. The only thing I could suggest is working to get a little bit of a sharper image. Other than that, I really liked the shot.

This is relly good Wade. I like how you've drawn the bishop foward not just with it being in focus, but with light too.

I really like this photo. The contrast is great, and the faces on the pieces give it character. I also like the background blurred.

I love how only one chess piece is highlighted and the rest fade into the background but are still visible. Well balanced. The bishop doesn't look very in focus to me but other than that great job!

I really like this picture because, although the subject is comprised of inanimate objects, the way you shot it makes the bishop seem very real and emotional. The way the shadows play on his face gives the shot a very dramatic feeling, and I think the amount of light you used is just right. The darkness and blurriness of the background pieces helps to emphasize the bishop, even though there is little light on him. Great shot.

This is a cool picture. I like the shallow depth of field and the way the single piece is highlighted. It does not look like a flashlight was used for this.

The illumination on that single piece brings a lot of focus to the picture. If there hadn't been that highlight, it would pretty much just be a picture of a chessboard. The highlight combined with the title tells a story. Wicked cool
