The Rugged Outdoors

Contributed by A McComb

I took this picture last week while in Colorado. It was freezing outside and I had to take it from the car window. I wish I would have had the guts to actually get out of the car and take a lot of photos - even go explore the house. But the road was icy making stops pretty difficult. I cropped the image, turned up the levels, and made it black n white. And in case there is any confusion, there is snow on the ground.

I really like this photo. I think its great how you focused more on the landscape in general instead of the house. I am not sure you could change anything in this picture. It looks really good. SPHS AM

This is very interesting. When i first looked at this it was as if you took it in a snowy place but now that i look closer it doesn't seem to be snow just an incredible black and white effect. I really like how you can see pretty far into the background with the snowy looking mountain. Also, just how old this house looks really make the picture awesome.

This is such a wonderful picture. The rule of thirds is used excellently in this picture. The house is offset from the middle averting your eyes from the background a bit. Looking into the picture more closely there is quite a lot going on in the back of it. GREAT SHOT.

This is delightful! Great focus point, and even though the house is offset from the center, it captures your eye instantly. Black and white was the right choice. Good job!

I really like this photo. I like how it has that sort of antique look. The snow really bring out the wood on the house. The only thing i don't like is how black the windows appear, maybe you put a mask on it but very good job.

I looove this photo. It's so frosty-looking; I can't tell if it's for real or an edit. Something about the house looks so surreal, and I can't put my finger on it. The photo is full of delicious textures that really say "rugged." Very pretty. (:

I get a wintery feel from this picture, I think that’s what you were intending to capture. The house looks so old and desolate; it makes me feel kind of lonely. The picture has such emotion, and the black and white enhances that perfectly. Some of the trees look darker than others, almost as if a fog has set over some of the trees. This shot has multiple interesting aspects, and is one of the best I have recently seen.

I love the winter time, which is why I like this picture. Elements of composition here is using rule of thirds. The mood I get from looking at the photo is definitely a wintery feel to this. Good job!

I like how the house is the subject, but there is a lot of other stuff to look at behind it. I like how the DOF lets the house and the hill behind it be in focus. The subject, being the house, is not in the center of the frame which lets other areas be shown above it. It looks like a quiet, winter home! Nice job!

I love the feel of this picture... Abandoned houses are great, and so is winter. Reminiscent of Ansel Adams. Great job.

This picture reminds meof the 1800's and I like that it is in black and white because if it were in sepia tone or color, I don't think it owuld be as strong. your composition elements are good also.

This photograph is so strong. I love it, i love it, i love it!!!
Colorado's so beautiful, and you took that, and deffinatly used it to your advantage. The black on the house, ties the whole picture together, and the gray far background really emphisizes the house. this picture looks great in black and white, and the contrast of the snow, and the trees really leads your eye around the composition. I want to use this picture as my background for my computer. Too bad Computer screens are horizontal.

I love this photo! I like your decision to make it black and white because it really adds to the isolated feel of it. I also really love that the whole shot is in focus. But my favorite part is that there are three different layers of the photo. I love how the house is very bright and stands out because of its’ rustic look, that the road in the middle is not quite as bright but still draws the viewer’s eye in, and that the trees in the background are foggy! I wouldn’t change a thing about this! You did an amazing job! (:

this picture is really great and clear. i like how the colors are varied, and i also like how you focused in the house, you can really feel the picture! when i first opened this picture the first i saw or grab my attention is the house because it's bright. i really like this picture. Good Job !! :)

This is an awesome shot. I love how the shot is not all about the house, the background looks cool, and the exposure is perfect. There is great depth, and the trees look great.

Everything in this photo (aperture, shutter speed) seems perfect except for maybe the composition. I cannot tell if you are using the house as your subject or the landscape. My suggestion would be to either crop it so that it is just the house or for you to have gone down into the valley (cold!) a little bit so that you would get the landscape more as the background for the house.

I really like this photo, especially in black and white. I like how it gives me a cold feeling, as if i'm actually there. I also like how part of the background is foggy. The abandoned look to the house is also really cool. Great job! :)

I love your choice to make this black and white. It emphasizes the mood and totally makes the details on the siding of the house way more interesting. It has such a great composition also. I think your positioning works well also, so I wouldn’t care about getting out of the car.

this is a glorious image...very complete would say.just beautiful. and i like how you can differentiate the hill and the foggy mountain above the road

This is an amazing picture! It looks great in black and white because it has a more wintery feel. I also like how the house is in the bottom third. The shot could be taken further away so the house isn't so big, but I really love it!

Looking at this makes me feel like I’m in the mountains at some old abandoned cabin. This is really neat. I like that you can see the snowy hills behind the house. You did a great job of using rule of thirds on this picture. The black and white also adds to the photo. Some pictures just seem like they wouldn’t quite be as good in color. I really like your final outcome, great job.
