Like Birdez

Contributed by B Johnson

I took this shot forever ago, but for some reason I just decided to edit it. I decided to try and go for the vintage look (again...) and it turned out alright (again...). I played with the levels and curves and did a few colour adjustments and was able to remove a really distracting wave that was coming to pummel these birds. I tried b/w but decided that this shot looked a bit better yellowed. Enjoy.

I think this shot is fantastic! What really caught my eye was the yellow tone and the smooth texture of the sand. I also like the reflections of the birds on the water. It is a little bright toward the top of the image, but it's not a big problem. Awesome shot.

I love the varying aspects of this shot. The lack of horizon, gives the picture a unique aspect of space, while the water's distorted reflection leads your eye around the shot. The "almost black and white" feel of the image definitely makes it appear vintage while the arrangement of the birds follows, loosely, the rule of thirds. Well done!

Yellow seems like it fits the picture. I really like how the first bird's shadow is reflecting in the water. The top of the photo seems a little overexposed. The birds themselves are very interesting, being that they are all in different "poses." The only problem is that, there isn't much else to look at besides the birds.

I really like this photo. I think the color adjustment was a good idea because it really does give it that vintage-circa 1930s- look. I think it would have made the picture a tad more interesting if you would have kept the wave and altered it slightly to fit the picture. Overall though, this is a good photo.

I think this picture is good, but not great. I really like the reflection of the bird a lot. It gets really blown out in the background, though, and it just looks kind of strange and flat because you can't see anything. I can't decide if I really like the yellowed color of the photo, I just don't think it does much for the photo. I think I'd like to see how it looks in b&w. I like the water part of the photo and that bird on the right in the back scratching its neck is cool. And the little ripples in the water. But, it's an interesting shot, so good job!

I really like the solitude that is seen in the picture. I also like how the ground is level and that the birds are all doing something different. The photo follows the rules of thirds. The only distraction that takes away from the photo is the white blurred line that is crossing the top; I'm assuming thats the wave that got clone stamped out. I also like your choice of the yellow overlay. - KMSPHS

This is a nice photo. I really like the reflection of the front bird it looks very nice because its not perfectly crisp but you can still make out some of the birds features. I also really like how all the birds have different poses one is sorta hunching over, one is standing straight up, and the other one is scratching his head. the only thing I dont like, even though you were going for the vintage look, is that the top of the picture is way too bright. I like the decision overall to make it vintage looking but the top of the image is just a little distracting.

This photo looks like something that you'd find on a postcard (btw I mean that in a good way). I'm glad you decided against B/W; it's also good that the yellowish color doesn't look foreign on the gulls. As far as filling the frame, everything is fine until you get to the empty space at the top where, presumably, a wave once resided. I wouldn't say that you did a bad job with removing the wave, since there isn't just a white space there, but it still throws off the balance a little bit. I can find no other issues with this photo, so good job!

Wow! You went for a vintage shot and I believe you achieved it. I think the contrast and the overall quality of this shot is great! I love the positioning of the birds in the ocean, I think the balance is unique. I first took a glance at this and it almost looks like it should be in a magazine or hanging in someone's house. I love this shot. I also like the "beachy" aspect of the photo. Changing the color to that yellowish is brilliant, it really adds to the shot and makes it that much better. Great job overall. I like this style!

I like this photo alot. I agree with your decision to go with the 'vintage' look. The composition is nice, but a close up of one bird would of been cool as well- particularly the bird in the back with its leg up. But overall great job!

This picture really catches my eye. I personally like the reflection of the bird on the water. Also, the texture of the water works well with the vintage look you went with. Everything in this picture is really crisp and clear so excellent job. JRieves

I like the vintage look to this photo. I also like that none of the birds look the same; that they are all in different positions. I also think that the way they are standing in a sort of triangle leads our eye to look at the next bird. The water on the sand makes the reflections look really cool. Good job!

I really like this photo, especially because of its vintage look. I do agree with you on your choice to pick yellow rather than black and white. It gives this picture a realistic feeling rather than a simple black and white photo. You did an amazing job getting rid of the distracting wave- I cannot tell that it was there. It seems as if the birds are standing in very calm water. I also like how the reflection of the bird up front is more clear than the ones behind it. Great job!!!

I think your right the yellow color seems to work well with this picture. I also like the reflection of the birds on the ground. it adds more to the picture then if it were just birds on the beach. I also like how the picture seems older then it is because of the picture.

This picture's very cool. I like how you went for the vintage look. It definitely looks better yellowed. I also like how the birds are centered in an almost triangle position. The levels adjustment was also really nice. Overall it is very well done.

I absolutely love this photo. The color is so peaceful. With each of the birds doing something different, it keeps your eye moving to see what they are doing. Also, the shadow of the bird on the bottom gives a cool effect. I like how there is nothing else distracting me from the birds. With no waves and no sky it gives more focus on the birds. Even though the birds are not too far apart and there is no sky or background to show the depth of field, you can still somewhat tell there is depth because the birds are not on top of each other. Great photo!!

I like this photo. What you did with the lighting and coloring really worked out. I like how bright it is in the back of the picture and transitions to darker colors up front. The reflections of the birds are really cool, there kind of distorted from the waves which adds a lot to the photo. I also like how you positioned the birds in the photo, they level each other out so my eyes aren't drawn one spot.

I like the shadow of the bird and the relaxed and old feeling of this picture. I love how you did the levels and focus on the birds. I also like how you can’t tell what is behind the birds like it goes off into nothing. This is a nice picture! Good job!

Bryan, really consider this as a career because you are very good at making fabulous images. I saw this picture a while ago on your blog, along with the others like it. I'm glad you chose this one, because it has that "vintage" feel, as you say, more so than your other Like Birdez. If I'm not mistaken, the original color for this was a faded bluish and what not. I dunno, but I liked those colours a lot. And yes, the shot does look better a bit yellowed as opposed to black and white; however, black and white would also look really good. I love your pictures and have decided that I want a copy of this too. Cox-SPHS

P.S. WATCHMEN tonight!

This is a very interesting picture. like the edits you did to it, it kind of reminds me of something I would see on someone's wall in their house. It almost seems like a painting instead of a photograph. I like this picture.

Bryan, I think you did a great job with this photo. I definitely agree with the style you chose of the kind of vintage look. I also think it was a great idea to give it that yellowed tone. I love the whole mood of this picture. Its so calm and quiet. it was definitely a good idea to remove a wave that may have been coming in. O also love the positioning of the birds and how you csn see their reflections in this shallow water. I think you did a really good job on this photo. - TW SPHS

I really like this photo. I'm not crazy about the quality of the picture. Its a little to bright, and not every clear. I really like the reflection in the water. I wish there was a bit more personality in the picture. Keep up the good work.

This is nice...its so peaceful and serene, I think because of the vintage look you used. I wish I were there right now. As for the picture itself, at first, the top was bothering me because of that white part that divides the picture, but I think it actually adds a lot to the whole feel of the image and compliments the white parts of the birds. I don't like how centered the birds are, but thats just me. The whole image looks like something I would see in a Lake magazine or something...very good :)

This picture is very attractive. The unified color looks great. The use of rule of thirds draws your eye well. The picture also has great shadows that adds to the overall effect. This photo is vintage and looks great.

This a great photo. The seagulls in the photo almost make a perfect triangle and have great shadows. The seagulls feet in the sand make a very cool effect. I really like this photo. JM 3/5

I personally, really like this photo. I really like the way that the birds look and how they're all doing something different. I also like how they all have a bit of a shadow. I'm really glad you went with the yellow instead of black and white. It was a great choice and a great photo altogether!

I like this picture a lot. I like how all the birds are in different positions. I like how you can see the shadow of the birds. I like how its kind of a black and white look to it. I'm glad you did these color choices instead of blue or some other bright colors. You made a good levels and curves adjustment.

I really like the overall look of this picture. The yellowish old time color that you have added to this picture adds a lot to this vintage look of this photo. The subjects, birds are also ones that you don't see a lot and the triangle that the birds is an interesting touch. The vintage, almost sketch-like, look the that the picture has makes for a very original and interesting piece.

Brian, again with the birds. But it's ok cause it mostly has the vintage feeling, but there's just some colors in their that make it go against the vintage look. I do like how the birds construct a triangle which can symbolize many things. The shadow of the first bird is also nice and crisp, good job Brian!

I really love this photo. I like how is looks like an "old timey" shot, kind of like a flashback in a movie or something. I also love the way the front bird has is shadow on the sandy beach. Also, the shot is kind of grainy which adds good texture and draws attention to the audience. I like the hue of the shot also...the kind of yellow glare from the sun. Overall, i love this photo.

I LOVE this picture. It looks like an old sepia photograph that was taken before digital photography and digital editing. it looks very real, and welcoming. The angle works very well because the shadows in the bottom and the bright light in the top move the eye around the image. The perfect reflection of the bird in the front looks really cool. The color works very well and i think this is an overall wonderful picture!

I love this picture. It is really cool how you were able to catch these birds in unique poses and see their reflections. The vintage look is awesome. grrreat job.

Wow, thanks for the crazy amount of feedback! To clear up a few misconceptions. I purposefully added a little noise to make it really get that "legit" vintage look. The top isn't overexposed, I whited it out on purpose. There was a wave there and it was extremely distracting. I kept the line there because it serves to move your eye around. It's kinda like the opposite of the shadow in the water. I'm glad that so many peeps enjoyed this shot.

I like this picture, i also like how you catch the birds on different poses. what i like the most about it is that the picture looks like somebody painted it not took picture and that makes it more valuable and attracting. Also the adjustments you did worked very well in the picture. I can honestly say that that's the best picture i have ever seen. good Job !!

I really like this photo. The adjustments and curves are really good. The reflections of the birds are really interesting too. This is a really good photograph.

This photo is really nice. It was a good idea to not change it to black and white. The yellow color really adds to the vintage feel of this photo and changing it to black and white would have taken away from that. I like how all the birds look identical, just in different positions and I also like how there’s a reflection on the ground of the bird in front.

Anonymous said...

This is a very nice shot, and I especially like the sepia tone you gave it. I think the fact that each bird is positioned differently gives the shot some interest. I like the reflection of the bird in front, and how the shot has depth due to the positioning of one bird in front and 2 in the back. The top portion of the photo looks a bit overexposed, other than that, this is a wonderful photo!

Anonymous said...

I really really like this photo. It’s unique. The bronze tint or sepia tint gives the photo character. Every bird is doing something different. The reflection on the water makes the photo look like a professional photography picture. For elements of composition you did filling the frame. Amazing picture, great job.

I really like this photo. Especially the tone. I like the reflection of the bird it really drew my attention to the photo. The photo is balanced with the one bird in the front and the two in the back. The photo looks a bit overexposed. Overall this is a great photo. Nice job.

Wow. this is fantastic. Its really simple, and sets a beach mood. I love The reflection of the birds on the sand also. And im glad that all three birds are different. I also love the colors. It looks almost monochrome but i love. Good job. this is one of the better photos on the blog.
