Dashed against the Rocks

Contributed by C Kent

This is a picture that I took in Gulf Shores one time when we went deep sea fishing. On our way out, I saw a really cool rock on the edge of the shore, with the waves crashing against it. I took a really quick shot, and I think it turned out great, considering it was taken in such haste.

I really like your use of the rule of thirds. I love how you captured the wave as it was crashing up against the rocks. The only thing i don't like is how dark the sky is because it almost runs into the water.

This is a gorgeous shot. I like how you captured the water hitting against the rocks. I wish the background would compliment this but still all together it is a pretty good picture.

I really like this photo. The colors of the rocks are really clear and vivid. The green is so bright and really stands out. The part of the picture that really makes it great is the crashing wave. The wave is so white and perfect that it really makes the photo. This is a great photo.

I love how crisp the water is as it crashes against the rock. Considering that you took the photo so quickly, that could have been blurry so nice job! The green color on the rocks looks very nice against the blues of the water and the sky. Without that pop I think the picture could have been a little boring. The only thing I might change is to remove what I think is a sailboat in the background. Once you start really looking it is a little distracting. But overall very well done!

This is an awesome picture. I like the placement and the focus on the subject. The rule of thirds is used nicely. I also love the cool colored color scheme. The green and blues match nicely with the sea picture. The buey and the ship in the background are kind of distracting. You could use photoshop to get rid of these. The lighting is also great. The way the wave and rocks are highlighted by the sun makes it stand out more against the cloudy skies. Nice shot.

This picture is amazing! There are so many good things about it! First off, the crash of the wave is close to perfect, and the green algae growing on the rocks is a great contrast. I’m thoroughly impressed that you were able to use the rule of thirds with this, and the color of the water is really nice. The only thing that could’ve been better is that the sky is almost the exact same color as the water. That could’ve been fixed on photoshop.

Wow Chris, I really like this shot! You captured the "splash" of the water on the rocks very well. I also like how the horizon is pretty much perfectly horizontal. I wish you would have edited this a bit more to bring out the clouds. The green rocks make a nice contrast with the white and the blue. Good job.

I like this photo and i thinks it's pretty neat that you captured this photo at the time you did. I think that the colors are a bit bland to me though. you should mess with curves and make it a bit more solid.

this picture is absolutely beautiful. it is so sharp and that makes it look amazing. im also loving the rule of thirds with the rock in the left hand corner. the blues and greens also look very vibrant and the main focus is perfect. very nice :)

like this photo. I especially like the angle you took the shot at. I also like how the colors seems to compliment each other. The only thing I would have done is adjusted the lighting a little bit in photoshop. Overall, this is a good photo though.

Wow, this is an incredible photograph. You did amazing with the rule of thirds, and I also really like the crop of the photo. You did phenomenal capturing the action of the photo. I would do a levels adjustment to bring out the clouds in the back a little bit.

I really like this photo. It's a great capture and I think you had all of your camera settings perfect. The colors are great and I love how the crash is brighter than the rest of the photo. Great overall composition.

This picture is amazing! I love the blue sky and the water hitting the rocks. Amazing timing as well! I love how there is a lot of depth in the photo behind the crashing of the water and rocks. I also like how the clouds are bluer than normal but that helps the water up front stand out more! However, I think a few adjustments would have made this photo even better. Maybe some curves adjustments? Anyway, amazing photo!

I love this photo. It makes me want to be at the beach right now! I like the way you used the rule of thirds. The way the waves are crashing against the rocks gives it a cool effect. I wish the clouds and the sky were brighter or lighter because it is so dark and it almost blends in with the water. I like the little bit of contrast with the green on the rocks also. Overall, great photo!!

Very niceee. The moss on the rocks look really stand out with the blue ocean. i agree with karis and the rule of thirds looks really good right here. The wave is in such good focus and is really white and looks great with the colors of the picture. I think the gloomy day outside really put this picture over the top. Good job.

This is a pretty good shot. You used the rule of thirds very well. I also like how the colors of the rocks are so vivid. i also like how crisp the water is. And i agree that this shot would be much better if the background was as interesting. Overall, i think this is a really good shot. - TW SPHS

This is a great photo. The greens and blues in this picture really complement each other. This is a great rule of thirds. I like how you took this picture while the foam of the water was crashing against the rocks. It really gives the photo a nice effect. I color of the sky and the water are to similar, so its hard to tell where the water stops and the sky starts. It looks like its sunny on the rocks but as you look farther out the weather looks worse. I cant tell what objects are in the water, and i think that they draw attention away from the sea foam.

SPHS Dashed against the Rocks

This picture looks great. I really like the contrast in colors. The green on the rocks look great. I love the detail on them too. Its great how you can see the moss and stuff. The detail of the water also looks good. I like how white the water is by the rock. It would look a lot better if the sky was lighter and clearer but overall it looks amazing.

I love how bold and in focus the crashing wave is. I like the contrast of the green on the rocks and the white wave since everything else is blue. I also like the clear focus on the waves and rocks. The crop could have been a tiny bit tighter to get rid of some of the large blue background. This is a really nice shot and I like it a lot!!! Good job!

this is a great photo. i like the colors in the photo. i like the shutter speed for the water splash. i like how it froze when you shot it and there int any motion blur. i also think you picked a good focal point> nice job.

This is really cool. I like how the spray is stopped in midair and completely in focus. The placement is pretty great too. The only thing I would say to make this better is get rid of the boats in the background to make it have a more au’ natural look. And maybe lightening the sky.

This is a very nice photo. i love how the action in the water is frozen. It is a very clear picture with some amazing colors. I like how the calm ocean is portrayed on the right side of the photo and then violent but beautiful is captured on the left. It uses a nice rule of thirds. This is an overall great picture.

I like the way you got the wave straight in the air. It looks like a bush the way the water brakes away like it is doing.
I think that maybe if the photo was taken in a different angle instead of straight on it might make this a stronger photo. Also maybe a little closer as well.

I love the detail and the focus of the green moss growing on the rock and how every droplet of the waves is shown. And how well the rule of thirds was used. Other than the blue water and blue sky blending together, I find this picture great to look at.

This photo is perfect. It follows the rule of thirds as well as the stopping or freezing of motion. I’m surprised you took this so quickly it appears like this picture was planned and that you took time into it. I personally love the ocean it gives me a certain type of calm and when I look at your picture I can visualize everything that is happening. Great job!

This photo is pretty good; I think it is a perfect snapshot. The water is perfectly frozen in time, and the effect is stunning. The color in the background is a little dull, but its all good overall. The crashing water is all chaotic and yet the sea is pretty calm so I think that makes the picture even cooler.

I like that the main focus is off to the side instead of the middle. The lighting is good and I think it has a good depth of field.

What I like about this picture is how you can see all the water against the rocks. It looks a little like you might have used rule of thirds for where the rocks were which turned really good. It’s a nice and bright picture. It is a relaxing photo which I like.
