I took a road-trip with my mom the other weekend to Selma, Alabama for my artist emulation photography assignment. The artist I was emulating is Walker Evans who is most known for documenting the rural South, including Selma, during the Great Depression. In editing this shot, I converted the image to black and white, and ran slight curves, levels and exposure adjustments.

I like how this photo was made black and white because it makes it look more antique and worn. I also like how it is cropped to show the wall and words around the door and how the word automotive stands out against the white. This is a really nice shot!
Quite possibly my favorite shot of the year. I am a sucker for this type of nostalgic imagery. Luckily if you get out of Hoover, back country Alabama is thick with this type of subject matter. I think you did Walker Evans proud. I agree with the first comment about the crop. The image has a great variety of shades and textures much like a patchwork quilt. I can't wait to print this one for you, I will try to get it done in the morning before the art show gets judged. Nice job, as always.
This is a beautiful shot. I like the older look to it and how the letters stand out perfectly but not exactly and the same time. The black and white also makes this picture look mysterious and i like that. You are a great photographer and I love your work.

This shot is an amazing one. The angle you took this picture from was a very nice choice. The black and white make it look more interesting because it gives it an old look and also unique. Even though some of the letters shown look kind of vanishing the automotive machine shop title surely stands out like it was mention previously. Like Mr. Myers said you did make Walker Evans proud this shot is a very good one. Cropping it was a nice choice as well. Overall this shot was a great one. Keep up the good work! -MC SPHS
i like this picture a lot because im familiar with part of birmingham and ive actually seen this before and when ever i see it i get exactly the same feeling that im getting now. the door itself has so much character and the way you cropped this image brings focus to it, black and whit works very well for it aswell, good job

I love this picture. I agree with Myers in that it is nostalgic, and that is appealing to anyone with a soul. I love the cropping and coloring, and the sharpness. I think this is a perfect picture.
I really like this photo. Theres so many differant shades and textures in it and they all go together really well. Like the comments above, the cropping job was great because you can see the words on the wall. I think my favorite parts are the ground and the top of the image. They both look really great!
This is a pretty good picture. The black and white looks great. The old time and grimy looking subject makes for a nice and unique photograph. The faded out writing above and on the sides of the door help to make this photo more interesting and eye catching. Overall a very good quality photograph with a very good subject.

This is such a cool shot. The black and white looks awesome. I like how worn down and old everything looks. The cropping was great. I like how you can see the writing on the sides of the door. The pole to the right of the door looks great, especially with the black wire running across the white wall. Great photo overall.

I think this photo has a lot of character. I like how you have it in black and white which adds to the story. The writing on the sides of the doors show through the dark bricks adds to the age of the photo. I think the doors could have followed a little more of two thirds rule. Other than that I really like this photo. It has a nice variation of black and white.
This is a nice shot! The black and white was really a great shot and I like how you used the rule of thirds. I like the slight angle on the wall and how the shot wasn't taken completely head on - it works. Overall, great work!
Like everyone else, I love this photo. There is so much in this one photo to interest the eye. The letters, textures, and lines are interesting. I feel that there are many images that don't look good in black and white, but this one looks great. The rustic feel of the building also adds to the photo. Overall, very nice job!

I really like this shot. I like the black and white because it makes the photo more antique and worn, it also allows more of the textures and patterns to pop due to the contrast. I think the composition is well chosen and aids the image a lot. -KMSPHS
This picture is very good, i think the subject is very interesting i like the angle you took the picture from. The black and white make the picture more attracting and valuable. I also like the different colors on the break it looks very neat and awesome. The written part of the door looks very old and antique, the cropping was also good. You did a good job in this picture.
This is such a great picture. The black and white looks great on it. I love the old, run down feel to it and how you were able to emphasize this. I like the area around the door in the picture, but I think a tighter crop might make it more eye-catching. Wonderful.
Immediately upon seeing this I thought of rural south during the Great Depression, even before reading the caption. I think you portrayed your artist's style of work quite well and you did a great job giving "a setting" to this shot. I really feel for the photo and it draws an emotional aspect from the viewer. I agree with Myers and think this is one of the best shots I've seen all year. I like the black and white and the texture-y quality this photo has to it. Although it is black and white, it feels so true to life and yo really captured the essence of the intention of your effort. Great job Laurel!

This is a really great picture. I love the way you cropped in on the door. The colors and brightness are fantastic and work really well with the old town feel. I love your subject. It's very sharp and I love the depth of field. I think that all of your camera settings were perfect.
I like this image a lot because of the vintage feel to it. I really like the fact that this is a black and white photo, it really makes the image so much better. You did a great job with this. dn sphs
I really like this picture I personally like how the image is black and white. It adds more texture to the picture. Also, this picture has a lot of shades that add contrast to the picture as well as crisp detail. Very good job! JR
This is a beautiful shot. The black and white make the picture more attracting and valuable. I like the older look to it and how the letters stand out perfectly but not exactly and the same time. The black and white also makes this picture look mysterious and i like that.I think the green is too vivid clear.

this is really nice. I really like how the image is in black and white and i love the contrast of black and white. I really like the door. Its really scratched up and looks very urban. This is a very interesting shot and the quality of this photo all around shows great talent. Good job.
I really like this shot! They old rustic appearance of it is taken out perfectly with the varying textures on the door, the brick and on the text. Also, the lines of the door lead your eye around well. However, one glaring problem I see is the sign on the left door. I don't know what's causing it, whether it's simply my eye or because of the angle, but the text appears to be blown up and pixelated... Other than that it's very well done!

I love how the doors are in the center of the picture. They stand out wonderfully in contrast to the brick. The editing done makes the photo look even more rugged. Which is rockin.
I love it when someone can find something ordinary, take a picture then make it look amazing. And I think that’s something you did with this. I really like it
