The Grapes of Wrath

Contributed by J McDaniel

I took this picture with my 35 mm camera and I did a levels adjustment to it. I like it because it reminds me of something from the 1930s in a Grapes of Wrath kind of way.

You have a really good touch with this vintage photography style, this particular lighting reminds me of the beginning of The Wizard of Oz. The sharp contrast between the blinding whites and ink slathered blacks below the horizon are almost hard on the eyes but the softness of the dusty lavendar sky helps relieve it from being overpowering.

I really like this one because of the cool lighting and dull color. And i kid you not when i first saw this i thought it was people climbing a structure. Now thats cool. W.H. - SPHS

I love this photo! it seems old and antiqued yet we know it is not. The purple and pinkish hue of the sky offer so much more aesthetic appeal to the photo. I do wish that i could see the flowers in a little more white-ish detail but other than that its fantastic.

This is a really interesting photograph. The feel and color of the image really does come off as if it's a vintage picture. I'm not quite sure what all I think about it, but despite the simplicity of just photographing one plant, this image has many points that grab my attention as a view. This is one of my favorite images I have seen on the blog all year. Good job

This picture is very beautiful. The color of the sky brings out the flowers, but not to much because there's to much black. If you turn down the contrast, the picture would be a little clear.

This picture is interesting. I like the whole sepia tone of the picture but I think that you contrasted it too much. You can barely see the detail at the bottom. If you made the picture a little more brighter then the picture would be AMAZING. Overall, I really like the sepia tone in the sky and the flowers standing out.

This is a really great photo. I love the levels adjustment you did too it. It allows for a really good contrast and allows for the photo to work as a whole. I also like how the horizon creates a leading line to the flowers which then lead your eye to other flowers and back out of the picture. I think you did a really good job when choosing the perspective you took this photo from. You also follow the rule of thirds with the one stalk of flowers rising from the rest. Overall great job on this photo. ATP SPHS

I think this is my most favorite photo yet. I love the pink sky in the background with the black trees, but it's not too much black. I can't stop looking at this picture! I loooove the white flowers as well..this photo just grabs your attention. I think it all plays together very well and i'm obsessed!

I like this photo. I like how it gives this feeling of something being old because of how the colors work together. I like the how the black and white make the picture work together better. It might have been better if it was a little brighter so we could see the details more. But the fact that the darkness of the picture makes it look really good. This was a really good photo.

This is a really cool looking picture. You filled the frame very nicely with the flowers, and I like how the horizon line is tilted and lower than the flower in some areas. The sky's purple hue is great, but I think the plant's detail could be seen better if it was a little brighter on the bottom of the picture. I also like how some of the flowers are dying- makes it much more vintage. Overall great photograph.

This is a very interesting picture, it has an interesting concept. I love the colors in it. I really also love that the contrast is making the flowers look they are about to pop off of the picture.

I love the black and white of this picture. The contrast of the light in the sky and the dark by the dandelions. Good job!

Definitely reminds me of your other "Softness" photo in color and theme. Once again, the black, white, and light pink create a very lonely and sad feel, as well as a great vintage look. The angle is great, and the white plants really stand out against the black background. ~J.B. SPHS

I felt drawn to this picture, because we just finished reading the book, and I really enjoy the "old" feel. The lower half may be a little to dark, but it adds to the picture.

The contrast between the white and blacks below the horizon are so clear making it look more modern then vintage. The softness of the dusty pink sky really portrays this photograph as a more vintage type photograph. This photo is very well balanced between modern and vintage.

I love this! It has a very vintage which is what i like about this picture. It looks like it was taken in the past. The colors of the background are breath taking.Although this isn't the prettiest plant, the colors sets a mood that I like. Even the faded trees in the background that are dead add an old/secluded feel. Nice picture!

This is such a vintage photography style and it is really cool. It appears to be an old and antiqued flower. I also love the color adjustment you did too it. It allows for a really good contrast. The background helps the picture come alive with the colors. It's a very different looking picture but one of my favorites. -KS, SPHS

This composition of this photograph is really well done. The focus on the flowers is really sharp and creates a really defined focal point. The rule of thirds is followed really well in this because the flowers are not in the center and the horizon line hits the top third which is very effective. The color range is really cool especially how the left bottom is really dark and the tree, horizon line is really dark but it the sky is the light purple that blends well with the white of the flowers. This picture is really well done.

I love the mystery of this picture. The purple sky is really pretty. The white flowers really stand out, and I like that. However, it might be a little dark toward the ground but that kind of adds to the picture. Good job

This is a really great photo! I like how there is contrast, but it goes very well with the photo. There is a softness the makes this photo simple yet interesting at the same time.

This photo is FANTASTIC. I personally do not like most floral photographs, but this was exceptionally executed. The composition, the cotton, reaching high, and the tones of the sky which along with the white of cotton provide a very specific barrier between the horizon and the plant. This is such an excellent photo, very warm, but also very severe, unforgiving.
