Well

Contributed by J Bryan

This is from a group of pictures I took at the Botanical Gardens over the weekend. I turned around to see my sister looking down the well, thought it might make an interesting shot, and snapped the picture before she could move. The original shot was very bright and I couldn't get it to look the way I wanted in full color, so I toyed around with the color balance and channel mixer until I got this.

nice usage of the rule of thirds. the well is located in good spot. it is balanced by the large tree on the other side. the colors are also good. the soft but warm colors create a calm effect. the photo is sharp and has a nice effect. the pose of the girl is also good; its casual.

I love the old fashioned look of the picture due to the color tinting. Good mixture of subject matter and tinting, it fits nicely. Great photo!

I like the style and color of the photo; it gives off a calming mood. It is interesting that instead of black and white; it is blue and tan. Great use of the rule of thirds. The girl and the well are in an eye appealing place.

I like this photo a lot. I like the mysterious vibe they picture produces and I love the black and white. I love the curiosity the picture evokes by the girl at the well and I love the amount of detail of the forest and the side walk. Good job!

I really like the color the photographer used for this particular picture. It it’s an interesting mix between color and black and white, there is still some amount of color left in the photograph. I also like how the viewer’s eye is lead through the whole picture. Their eye is drawn to the girl and the well and led down the path to the dark of the tree. I like all the texture the photographer captured in the tree and the stones and grass. It is a very well taken picture. I also like the contrast between the light of the well and the dark of the tree. It creates a clear balance that is very visually appealing.

This photo is realy inspiring. Everything in the photo seems to be at peace and yet it there seems to be a look of adventure. The color of the photo makes it seem at peace. Your sister looking down the well was a great touch to it. She seems realy interested in the well. You realy used the rule of thirds in your photo. Which I think makes it look cool and inspiring. ~SLS

Very interesting photograph and excellent composition considering it was a quick random "point and shoot". I like what the photographer has done with the color as well. Very nice.

Very beautiful tone on the photo. The composition seems well thought out and the contrast of light and dark adds a lot of interest. Great photo!

I really like this picture. It is a very interesting shot - your sister and the well on one side of the picture adds a lot. You did a great job on filling in the side of the picture that did not have the subject in it - instead of leaving the image feeling empty, it is filled in with interesting material (the path) but is not cluttered. I would have liked to see the picture before the adjustments, but I also think that the work you did on it adds a lot. Great job overall.

This is awesome! I really like it because of the really good rule of thirds. I love the color of this picture; it's unique but truly goes with the photo. I'm glad you got your sister in the shot, because it just make it that much more interesting to look at. Very nice job :) -EB from SPHS

I really like this picture! The placement of the well in the left third of the picture is perfect. I also like how long the shadow from the girl is. The old-fashioned, water-colored coloring adds interest and makes it look antique. I also like the girl's striped dress, it fits in perfectly with the photo. Good job :)

I am loving the composition of this photo..everything from the highlights and shadows to the offset subject, I love the greenish bluish tone, and I think everything helps the photo look so dream like, and magical.

This picture is very cool. I really like the old times look of it. I thought it was taken in sepia until i read the description. I think you did a really great job with the color balance and channel mixer to make it this way. It works really well. I also like the pose of your sister. It worked out very well that you took this photo at this moment. The perspective is great and follows the rule of thirds well. Great job. Keep up the good work. ATP SPHS

You did a great job with the lighting in this photo and I really like the sepia tone it has. Also, you used the rule of thirds so your subject is to the left moving the eye around the photo more. Good job :)

This is a really great photograph. The first thing that caught my eye was the old age feel of the picture. I noticed that the picture follows the rule of thirds, which was the next thing I noticed. My favorite parts of the picture are the pose of the subject and the fact that the picture isn't in full color. Being in full color would have distracted me and taken away from the depth and feel of this photo. Over all, great job!!

This picture is really cool. The color scheme makes the picture interesting. The colors portray a calm, old fashion photo. The perspective is very well done. By having the girl and the well on one side, it follows the rule of thirds well. -KS, SPHS

I really like the color effect of the picture, it really make it look nice and old. The rule of thirds is used well here with the girl and the well off to the side. The focus in this picture is really good, everything is in focus.

I love what you did with the color balance in this picture. It makes for an incredibly rustic effect. The picture as a whole looks like a great antique photo. The girls dress and the old well goes great with the color balance.

This is a great picture! It feels like an opening scene out of a movie about the little girl. I like the coloring and shadows a lot. My only complaint about the picture is that part of the well is cut off, but you probably couldn't help that. Overall, great picture!

This picture gives off a creepy and depressing vibe. The editing is extremely well done and almost makes it look like a painting. I love the choice of colors you used. Amazing photo.

The picture looks like a painting in a way. I like how its not in color it make it look kind of old. I like how everything is positioned. and how the well and your sister are the focus of the picture.

The coloring of the picture is awesome! It's like black and white with a tint of color. It's not too harsh looking. The candid shot of your sister in it makes it more meaningful. The objects in the picture also balance out very well! Great picture!

Superb picture! The way you colored it really helps tell a story! This pictures feels like something right out of the 60s. I'll have to remember this spot and try to get some shots for myself!

I like the way this picture looks classical. The shadows of the well and the girl is really good, I like the way the sunlight is still visible on the ground. Overall it's just an amazing picture. Having the girl in the picture also makes this shot really good.

I really like this picture because it literally looks like it came out of a magazine or a hallmark card. I like that you put in black and white; it gives an old time look and really fits the theme of the picture. I also like how you didn’t have the girl and the well be the center of attention because you are able to see the nature around it. Also that the girl is looking in to the well it tells a story that maybe she is making a wish.

Very interesting picture. The color of this is not boring and it helps tell a story. I like that you were able to take this quickly before she moved. Also I think that your use of color in this picture was also very interesting. The lighting of this picture was pretty good since it was solid and still. The trees and the path are also pretty cool since they help others understand why you took the picture.

I like the style of this picture. You used a lot of grey but you can still tell there is some color like on the roof of the well. This picture makes me feel kind of lonely though. Like maybe something happened to the girl.

I actually love the color of this picture! It does feel kinda lonely, but i agree it helps it tell the story. But this is really good :)

I vote this picture best on the blog. This picture is timeless. I love the antique 'Secret Garden' feel to this picture. It looks as if it could be decades old or taken yesterday. I also like the different rocks in the path because it makes the picture more realistic. The well's coloring is perfect, and I can't find a thing wrong with this picture!

This picture looks very old fashioned. It is a great example of the rule of thirds!! The colors are very interesting because you don't normally see photos like this. Your sister looking into the well definitely makes the photo. Well done.
