I really like this photo. The curved bodyline against the black really makes the photo flow and provides nice separation btwn the left & right sides of the photo. The solid black on the LHS is also very effective in making the texture and tones of the RHS more prominent. And lastly, there's just enough ear to give the photo context (i.e., I know exactly what I'm looking at, despite the abstract feel). The soft focus only adds to the photo. In short... nicely done. A simple but effective photo.
I agree, this is a very good photograph, and your point about the inclusion of the ear lobe is correct. It wouldn't be nearly as good without it. I like how the lobes shape is very similar to Joseph's chin. Good job Matt.
