The invisible hand of Adam Smith

contributed by E Cotter

I took this picture of my hand for the human anatomy assignment. I like it because the color of my hand is so defined in front of the black. I also like how my fingers behind my thumb are blurry, but my thumb is really sharp and my fingerprint is visible. I used to bite my nails, and it was a bad habit, so this picture shows my triumph against nail-biting, as well. It's named "The Invisible hand of Adam Smith" because of Adam Smith's theory of the economy being directed by an invisible hand. Not to be so literal, but there's a hand in it, so they coincide.

Sadly, I have to admit that the title of this piece is far more thought provoking and interesting than the photo itself. Aside from being in focus, the shot seems much more like an oops shot (or a "I need something quick for class" shot) than anything else, and I can't really see where any thought was put into the composition of the shot prior to pushing the shutter button.

The *idea* of the shot in its most basic sense is a good one, but the execution is poor and seemingly a bit lazy. I think the best advice I could give is for you to go have a close look @ M Carstensen's shot of the Adams apple (the shot posted before this one). It's the same idea in essence (a very basic anatomy shot), but the end result has a lot more intrigue.

In taking photos, once you have your end result, always ask yourself... is this photo enticing? If not... then ask yourself "why not?". It may not change your current shot, but it'll improve your next attempt dramatically.

... but I think that your response proved that you are! The fact that, despite the "confidence drop", you were able to understand where I was coming from, respond objectively, and also find something good in my comments shows your ability to take criticism quite. From that, I suspect that your photography will most definitely improve.

... and NO, it wasn't "terribly, horribly, poorly done"... *now* you're being way too hard on yourself. I just said that you could do better. Even when have something specific that you're going for in a shot, don't be afraid to take like three zillion different photos of the same thing... playing around with different angles, different lighting maybe, etc... (or in this case, maybe different sides of the hand, different fingers, different angles, different curves, gestures, backgrounds, etc). Eventually the potential of that shot / idea will pop out right at you. Trust me, I personally stink at this myself, so I understand that it's easier said than done. But I'm working on it.

As for your potential, I'm sure Mr. Myers will pull every ounce of it out of you in the spring. As long as you're willing to learn from each shot (even the good ones!) and improve on the next, you'll be in good shape. In the meantime, enjoy your vacation!
