Inspection Wise 1999

Contributed by: N Jackson

I took this picture for our rule of thirds photography assignment. After taking quite a few of the same shot I wasn't satisfied with the irritating flash glare that was being left in the image. So to solve this problem, I found an index card and folded it to the width of where my camera's flash sits when its not in use. By using this home made diffuser I was able to, after many trial and error, bounce the light at such an angle that the flash glare was eliminated but that I retained some of the illumination which is what brings out the colors in the paperweight's red. I like this image because of the smooth texture of the glass and the shade of red. I also like the subtle, natural looking light reflections captured in the glass and that having the paperweight positioned where it is allows for the table that it sits on to lead your eye around the image.

While this shot looks like it was easy to take, I believe Neil when he says it took many shots. Reflective objects can be very challenging to capture without offensive glare. I think the shot is a good one.

MAny don't appreciate some of the technical things we attempt as we take photos. While this may not be a "wow" photo, knowing the backgrond helps me understand what the photographer did to create it. Many students would have accepted the flash glare, you worked through a solution to eliminate it.
