SURF'S UP!!!!

Contributed by E McDougal

This summer I lived in oregon for about a month. while I was there I did a lot of touristy stuff and one of the things on my list was visit haystack rock. I really like how I was able to capture the surfer with haystack rock in the background-I ran a levels adjustment, hue and saturation, and I lowered the yellow on the board with a selective color adjustment.

I think this photo is amazing. I love how the atmosphere is so subtle and peaceful. I like how the only 'color' so to speak is the surf board and the rest of the colors are very earthy. I also like that the water is reflecting parts of the haystack rock and the sort of "fog" that surrounds the rocks and water. The best part, to me, is that the surfer is just sitting there almost as if he/she is taking it all in (which contributes to the peacefulness of the photo. Great job :)

I like the the rocks in the background and the surfer. Changing the yellow turned out great that way it doesnt stand out as much. Also I like the slight reflection in the water of the rocks. It doesnt make the whole picture look dull.

I love this picture because it looks so peaceful. The girl looks like she is really thinking about something, and i love the rocks in the background. It gives the photo a feel of abstract symmetry and really balances out the photo. I like how everything is dark and kind of depressing, but the surf board is a brighter yellow. Overall, i really like this picture. Good job!

i really enjoy this photo. The background really captures the essence of the beach. And i like how you have no idea what the girl is thinking but sh stands out from the rest of the picture. The fog in the background makes it look even more mysterious.

Nice picture. I like the atmosphere and the rocks in the background. Good use of rule of thirds. -KBM SPHS

I think you did a great job on this picture. The rocks in the background add a sort of balance to the picture. There is a good use of the rule of thirds. Also, i really like how the only color in the picture is yellow and everything else matches the kind of dark tone. I also think you did a good job capturing the surfer, she looks like she is in deep thought and it makes the picture even better.

What I like the most about this picture is how the bigger rocks surround the surfer. The use of color was used very well. It is nice that the only real bright color is the orange on the surf board. It keeps everything subtle and draws me to only look at the surfer.

I love this background of this picture, It really captures the beach picture. I also like how the yellow surfboard sticks out from the rest of the picture since most of the colors are blues and grays. Very good use of rules of thirds!

My favorite thing about this picture is how the girl in the picture is the only person on the beach. I think the bright yellow surf board really brings out the entire picture. Another cool thing about this picture is the sand. It is so smooth making the viewer think that the girl surfer is the only person on the beach. Cool picture!sphs

I really love how the rule of thirds is used. The fog in the back is really nice and i love that she is just sitting there. it makes me think about what i would think about if i was her. The thing i love the most about it is that she is the only one out there, or that's the feeling it gives off. Its just her and the waves.

I really love this picture. I like how the atmosphere is so peaceful and the lady in the picture is just calm and resting. I also like how the color of the board is colorful and the rest of the picture are gloomy colors.

This picture is really good. I like the rocks in the background. The mood is kind of peaceful but also troubling. I like the rule of thirds you used for the girl; it wouldn’t have been as effective if she was in the middle. I also like the coloring, it adds to the mood. Great job!

Although this picture is good it could be a lot better. In this picture you want the person to be a little further back otherwise people will not be able to get a good sense of what she’s looking at and people may get a little lost. The scenery is great and the lighting is good for how cold the air and water is.

I like how color in this photo makes the girl really pop because of her wet suit. I also like how this girl is placed to the corner of the picture so you can see the scenery around her. The element of composition used here is the rule of thirds. The exposure in this picture used well. The mood from this picture is cold.

I'm not too sure if I like this photo. It, unfortunately, has lots of unrealized potential. Firstly, The horizon is at an angle, which was the very first thing I noticed. When cropping your photos, be sure to use the ruler tool (Cmnd + R) to make sure your horizon is perfectly level.

Secondly, the colors in this photo are far too neutral. Color wise, nothing sticks out to me except for a tiny portion of the photo where the board is. I would definitely like to see more contrast in the image.

However, composition is where this photo has the most area to improve on. With the subject being on the left side of the frame, in addition to the subject looking left, her line of sight creates an implied leading line that takes the viewer straight out of the image. It makes me want to know what she is looking at and the image does nothing to show it. The composition would have worked much better with the subject on the right side of the frame. Also, I have to bring up the question as to why it was necessary to include so much empty space on the right side of the image. To be honest, there's not much there to look at. A much more pleasing image could have come from really getting up close to the subject, perhaps a little more to the front to see her face, or an over the shoulder view, and chip away at some of this negative space.

This picture is really neat. I like how the yellow serf board sorta brightens things up in the picture. I also like how you can see a reflection in the water of the rocks. That looks really neat. KR SPHS

This is a great picture! I love the horizontal cropping and the balance in the shot. The board really pops but its not overdone. There's a rock that looks like its coming out of her head which could be edited out. Otherwise fantastic job :)

this is such a good picture. i like how the girl is off to the left and balances out the rocks. running a levels adjustment looks good, it makes the scene feel cold and misty. overall good photo!

This is a great picture! I really like the horizontal landscaping and how the image is so spread out. The girls being in the bottom left corner makes your eyes really radiate out from her and on to the rest of the image. The odd number of rocks and their odd formations really give the viewer some interest. The girl appears to be in deep thought and it almost appears she is just as amazed and I am at the rock formations. Great shot! PT-SPHS

Cool picture!
I like the dimensions of this photo. I also like the colors here. Everything is cool colors except for the surfboard, which is a pale-yellow. However, I would have named it differently. The day looks quite dreary, and there aren't any big waves. The surfer looks somewhat sad about this, so the title of "SURF'S UP!!!!" doesn't seem to fit. However, I do like the picture.
