Austin Likes to Live on the Edge

Contributed by E McDougal

This summer i went to the grand canyon with a group of high school students from my church. It was almost time to go and we realized we had no idea where austin was so we all split up to look for him and when we went back down the trail we saw that he had climbed out on a ledge and was just sitting and overlooking the grand canyon.... i did a levels adjustment and threw it on the blog :)

I really like the overall composition of this picture. It is so cool that you were able to capture this shot, and the fact that a person is in it makes it even cooler; and scarier. I love how you have half the picture of the mountain and the other half of the beautiful canyon scenery. I really like the colors that you captured; especially the clouds and the blue color of the sky. The backdrop is captured so well that it kind of looks fake. Very well done.

It's really cool how the image is split in half from the canyon and the backdrop. You did a great job capturing the sky and the canyons in the background, and the contrast between that and your friend sitting on the canyon ledge is interesting. Great job on this picture!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, I absolutely love this picture! The sky's color looks amazing. You really captured how the Grand Canyon looks, with the brilliant sky contrasting with the washed out rocks when they are far away. It's a special photo because Austin is by the hole in the rock that is letting in light. I can't think of anything that I would change about this picture!

I really like the bright blue sky and the composition of this picture. With the person in the picture makes it even cooler. It looks like he's not scared to sit there. Overall the picture is really good. :)

The view in this picture was amazing! It’s kind of freaky that there is a person there looking at the view. Also the blue in this picture really pops out. It’s like baby blue and it mixes with the cliffs. It adds a cool effect. VD-ERHS

THIS PICTURE LOOKS GOOD.IT KIND OF LOOKS FAKE.I LIKE THE THE GRAND CANYON LOOKS SO CLOSE UP AND THE REST LOOKS NOT AS CLEAR AND FURTHER AWAY. I ALSO LIKE THE CLOUDS AND SKY IT LOOKS KIND OF FAKE. I LOVE IT.

This is an amazing picture! The clouds in the sky are so sharp they almost look fake! I love how you use the rule of thirds with the cliff on the left and the canyon on the right. Although, It almost looks a little bit like its cut down the middle. I love how Austin is highlighted by the light coming out of the tunnel. It draws your eye to him even though there are so many other great things to look at! The sharpness of the cliff rocks makes them look real and i feel as if im on the cliff sitting next to him. Over all a magnificent photo!

This picture shows a good example of landscape photography. The clouds are really close to the canyon and show the differentiation in color to the canyon and clouds.

My favorite thing about this picture is probably the view itself. I like the way the canyon on the left looks pretty solid, and the right side of the picture looks blurred out but not really blurred. GREAT PICTURE!

Love the even split down the middle of the picture, as well as how the horizon on the right half divides it into quarters. The contrast of the orange and brown cliffside against the blue and white sky is interesting, and I like the natural, candid pose of the person looking over the landscape. Nice photo! -JB SPHS

I love this picture! I think the coolest part of the picture is the shadow of the clouds on the mountains. I didn't even see the person sitting on the cliff until i looked at the picture for a while. The colors also look great, and the texture is great. The levels adjustment also helped the blue in the sky pop. I like the fact that it seems like I can see for thousands of miles, which is why the Grand Canyon is so amazing. Overall, Great job!!-ce

I really like this picture a lot, it almost looks like in the picture the guy was placed in there and not really sitting on the mountain. The sky is beautiful in this picture and so clear! The details are great in this picture! Good Job!

This picture is really cool. It almost looks like it was made on photoshop, but the fact that it's not makes it an even better photo. The color of the sky is amazing. Practically almost the perfect shot.

wow, i really like this picture! i really like the clouds and the way the right side of the picture looks more faded than the left. it's a very interesting shot!

I absolutely love the details in the background of this shot. The colors are fantastic and it shows the beauty of the grand canyons really well. I think it would look better if you shot it so that Austin was more in the bottom left third. It would make it look a lot more pensive. great job

I wasn't too impressed by this photo. On the positive side, you have done a fantastic job at capturing a perfect sky in this photo, and the horizon line serves to be a great leading line going into the subject. However, overall, compositionally, I'm not particularly thrilled with this one. The dark person, Austin, being on a dark background with a very bright area right next to him leads my eye completely away from him.

For this to be more successful, in my opinion, you would either need to focus on Austin, and make the photo show the dangerous road he took to reach his destination, which I could see being accomplished by utilizing a portrait format, showing none of the background from this photo, and placing the subject towards the top of the image.

Or you may also try an over the shoulder view showing what he is looking at.

Or even a close up of his face with a reflection in his glasses of the marvelous view.

I may need to go to the Grand Canyon soon.

Cheers,
Patrick Glenn, Auburn, and Myers' favorite alum.

This is a really good picture. I like the atmospheric perspective between the canyons and the background. The colors are very vibrant but also subtle. Good contrast.

WOW! The view is breath taking. I love how far the depth of field is. It is amazing. I also like how there is so much detail in the rocks and the background. I think that possibly if you had showed the path that is in the bottom left hand corner it would have looked better because it leads to him. I also think that like rachel said if he was more on a third it would have been better...like had you backed up a little I believe it would have looked a lot better. I love how clear the sky is too! I like this picture and I hope he got out safe! Good job!

This picture is legit. The depth of field is amazing. The sharpness of the photo makes you feel like you're actually there. MB. SPHS.

I like this picture, because the picture itself has special quality of view. I like how sky and land makes perfect background.

I really like how this photograph is set up. The split screen view of the ledge and the canyon is beautiful. The sky turned out really well too, so did the cloud. The picture is beautiful, I think, because it's simple. There's not extreme digital changes or any complicated, busy images. It almost seems kind of sad, because he's all alone, but after reading the description, it doesn't seem that sad really. It was a beautiful photo opportunity, great job.

I really like this picture. This guy must really love to take risks cause I'm definitely afraid of heights. But I like the overall composition of this photo. It makes me wonder what he was thinking. I love the detailing and it shows the beauty and overall wonder of the Grand Canyon. the clouds and the sky look like they've been photo shopped in some way, they look a little artificial. But OVERALL I LOVE IT!!!!!!! A.S.-SPHS

The clouds are my absolute favorite part of the photo. They look incredible against the blue sky. Fantastic job of getting the entire image into focus. Wonderful job!

Great job getting a good exposure on both the shadowed cliff and the bright clouds. The human elements helps it to be more than a postcard image. My only gripe is that you did not make you horizon flat... a quick fix that should be attended to.

This is a good picture. I like how you can see him on the edge of the of the canyon really well. I also like how the picture of the mountain is really clear. The color of the mountain is really good and I like the contrast. I don't like how the other half of the picture is doesn't look real. It almost looks like it is photoshopped into the photo. If it had been darker or not as much in focus it might look more real.

I really like this pictures lighting and the color of the sky. I also like the detail like the shadows from the clouds.

This is a really cool picture. I love how the landscape on the right side really pops out from the cliff on the left. It looks foggy which shows the distance compared to the clouds and cliff.

This is an amazing photo. What makes it so great is that you didn't do much to it, and it turned out this good. It's so good it almost looks like it's not real. The contrast of the ledge and the sky is beautiful. My favorite part of the photo is the sky. The angle over the canyon is good. I Think if the photo was more focused on the subject, Austin, it would have been a bit better. Overall, great photo.

This picture is really cool. i like the angle and the way you can see of into the distance. maybe you could've blurred the backdrop move to make the mountain stand out more.

This picture is so cool! It's like the background is 3d almost! the guy looks really small compared to the mountain so it looks awesome!!!

The vivid colors in this picture are great. You captured the cliffs and the view of the sky and canyon very well. I love the contrast of the ledge and the canyon view. It makes the canyon and sky look almost unreal.

This photo is beautiful. I like how it's half and half of the sky and the canyon. The right side of the photo is bright and the left side is dark. It's interesting how your friend is sitting on the ledge. Great job on the contrast. You have really shown how beautiful the Grand Canyon.

I really like this photo! I love how it is almost separated into two part. The left side is very dark and detailed while the right side is very light and foggy which allows you to tell its distance from the mountain. I just noticed the guy sitting in the mountain! That is so awesome:)

I really like this. Its cool how all the colors and the elements of the picture come together. However, I think if you had zoomed in a little bit more it would look less animated. Over all, very good job!

The composition of this picture is amazing-- very good use of the rule of thirds. It has a very calm mood to it. I love how the closer mountains are so rich and the farther away ones are lighter and more muted. Great depth of field! -SPHS A.H.
