Up da Creek

Contributed by K Gillespie

I took this picture last time I was in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. My parents and I went up through the mountains and my parents stopped and let me take pictures with their very nice Cannon camera. I thought the colors were pretty and it was a very postcard-like picture. Let me know what you think.

I think this has the potential to be a great photo. It just needs a little work. It seams like there could be a better way to crop this. The creek could run a little more out of the left corner and there could be a little less background. I think that that would really help the photo. But I do really like the idea. Nice job.

I really like this shot but it's hard to find one center of focus. It just seems a bit busy between foreground and background and the depth of field looks really shallow. Perhaps you could use a layer adjustment layer and put in a gradient to create some form contrast. Or you can use a gaussian blur in the background to kinda make it feel like there's more depth and a focal point of interest. Otherwise I really like this shot. But like you said it was "postcard like" while I think it's a well composed shot, maybe next time you could go for a more unique angle or perspective that may not be so obvious. -Garver

Your photo is very nice and has a good color sense. I feel it just needs more of a focal point - perhaps should have been angled a bit differenty. It is restful, isn't it? Keep it up.

Well I don't know about those other folks, but I think my focal point is where the stream disappears into the distance. I like the perspective, and the stream/creek thing gives it a good sense of depth. This would make a good Thomas Kinkade painting...you should probably call him about that or something.

As nature photography is my passion, I was enthused to see this image here. In all, the scene is gorgeous and nicely seen. The framing, composition, and (more specifically) the placement of the stream slightly left is very well done. However... the photo suffers tremendously from being far too contrasty and (perhaps?) oversharpened. Since you were hiking with your parents, I'm guessing that you didn't have a tripod. But those are essential for shots like this since the forest is dark, and the long shutter speeds will lead to blurry photos like this. Sadly, the contrast and oversharpening totally take away from the softness and tranquility of the scene. As for cropping, I might be tempted to crop just a little off the top to minimize the amount of white sky in the top right corner (very distracting). Ideally, I would've recommeneded a slightly different angle for the shot to minimize (but not necessarily eliminate) the sky to begin with. Lastly, I disagree with both previous comments concerning the "center of focus" and "focal point". I think that such photos don't always need a strong center of focus, particularly since the stream leads you thru the frame quite nicely. Overall, the beauty of the shot is not enough to overcome the technical difficulties; but if you're ever on that same trail again it would be nice to see you try this shot once more.
