The Emerald City

Contributed by L Newport

I took this picture in Chicago the other weekend, for our architecture assignment. I cropped slightly and rotated it a bit to make the shot straight, put it in black and white and then ran a curves adjustment, which I set on cross process. I did a slight hues adjustment to tone the green down a bit, and then just a little adjusting to shadows/highlights, and a little bit of sharpening.

I think the blog is on a roll. I like your image and I think you did a great job capturing the light you saw. I like the green as it gives it an older retro feel. The timelessness of the buildings goes well with this. The small tree at the vanishing point works well as a place for my eye to come to a rest. Its diminutive presence among all the buildings eludes to an interesting theme, especially, with the edition of the emerald pallet. You have impressed me! TTU!

I like how this photo is taken in what looks like an ally, and has interesting lighting.
The lighting is a little weird, some spots are dark and others are very light, but the lighting seems to fit the picture. I would change it. This photo seems to be a little over exposed; I think the photographer may have used Photoshop to enhance the colors. All in all i am really impressed with this picture!

I really like this photo. It's really neat how the light is coming in on this picture. It looks sort of tilted though. I don't know if you did that on purpose or not because it still looks nice. I also like how you adjusted the colors to green. Pretty!!

In a way this picture is kind of creepy, but I still like it! I look’s very old fashioned. The green tint gives it character. I think he used an outside setting to get the natural lighting. It’s filling the frame mostly. My eyes were mostly focused on the top area. But it’s still filling the frame. I’m getting a mysterious mood from this picture. Excellent picture!

I'm going to have to disagree. I don't really like this picture. I think the green really over does the shot. The contrast bewteen the green, and the blown out sky is really distracting. It also looks really noisey. I kind of wish that the alley was more centered, because I am seeing too much wall on the left side. It also looks like it is not aligned. It's an interesting subject though, but it is still not my favorite, but hey that's just me.

hey guys- thanks for sharing your thoughts with me! i appreciate the compliments as well as the criticism. in response to one comment, the picture does seem slightly tilted. i've worked on rotating it several times and this is as close to straight as i can seem to come. in response to another, the 'he' is actually a 'she' :) and i didn't use an outside setting..my camera was on manual aperture with the aperture set at 5.6. i was just walking in chicago and stopped really briefly to snap this shot so i was actually just incredibly lucky to be able to capture the light as i did. anyway, thanks again..keep commenting. we all each have individual blogs as well so make sure you check those out too!

Very nice. I really like the lighting in this; the light beams and the washed out sky create an interesting look. The picture is a bit grainy and green, but that works well with the setting to give it an old feeling. The only thing I would say is that it still looks a little tilted, although that might have something to do with the perspective.

I really like this photo. Past the opening of the alley is too bright to notice any details, so it keeps you focused on the alley itself. The lines of light remind me a bit of an old church, which is interesting as you don't often associate city alleys to cathedrals. I don't think the shot's quite level though and it's really bothering me.

Not my favorite. It's very grainy and the green is overdone. To me this picture is one of those 'you got lucky shots' that happens to turn out really awesome. The thing that really gets me is the how it's crooked. Also, I'm not a fan of how there is no focal point. Good ideas, just not properly executed.

This photo truly is stunning. This photo could be something straight from a magazine! I love the effect of the green lighting. The editing looks very simple too. Not all good photos need complex editing. Very good job!
