HDR Rose

contributed by B Johnson

This is one of my first shots at making a decent HDR image. I've had this dying rose in my room for a few weeks, and I thought it would make an interesting subject. Apart from merging the images into HDR, I've done a decent bit of clone-stamping to remove some distracting details. This image isn't perfect (it's a tad out of focus and the backround sucks), but I'm pretty happy with it.

I really like this shot. I think that exposure of the rose is good, it isn't overexposed or underexposed. I also like how the rose is the main focus in the shot, and that there isn't anything else to distract from it. Even though the background is somewhat dull, it fits well because it doesn't take away from the rose. I like the color of the rose too. It is unique and not like a usual rose. I also really like that the rose is big and takes up most of the space in the shot. Overall, I really like this shot.

First of all this is a great photo. I really like there is nothing drawing my attention away from the flower. I also like the subject. I never knew how well an aging flower would look, I mostly see them as bad things like a lot of other people. Now I want to see more Photos of aging flowers.

I think this is a great photo. I love how it is completely about the rose. There is nothing in the picture to distract you from it. I also like the color of the rose. It really is cool how a dying rose can be so vibrant. I also like how the rose is perfectly centered in the frame, it keeps your eye on the rose the whole time. This is a really cool shot. TW-SP

The color overall is good, but around the edges of the rose you lose some of it. Due to this being an HDR photo, this color could have added that surreal effect that most HDRs have and that you can kind of seen on the bottom part of the rose. The stem kinda works to pull your eye away from the rose and probably would have been better to cut it off or try to crop it out in PS. You might could have cropped off a little on the sides, but other than that the framing is good. One other thought, even though HDR was kinda the purpose of this shot, it might have looked really well in black and white.

I really like this photo because I like the way the image is cropped. Because the shot is so tight to the frame there's nothing distracting to take away from the beauty of the flower. I also like the more simple background because it contrasts the detail of the flower well.

I like this photo but I also feel that it is a bit generic. The rose is centered and is facing the camera dead one which makes it some what boring. I think it could have been more interesting if the shot was taken from a different angle. The color of the rose is great but the background is bland which causes the photo to lack some visual interest in my opinion. Not bad though overall. EP-SP

I really like this photo a lot. Because the rose is the main focus and nothing is distracting you from it. I love how vibrant the rose is. Also, I dry roses but I would have never thought they would be so pretty to photograph. Great photo.

I LOVE this photo! I’m sucker for rose-themed pictures too! I think the color of the flower is cool, not quite red, and almost orange. The entire image looks old and antique, a breath of fresh air in comparison to most other PhotoShopped pictures. It’s true that the background is a little boring, but that just adds more emphasis to the flower. Very, very nice!

HDR post-processing, when done correctly, can produce wonderful results. This photo is no exception. The vivid colours are what really draw me in. The colours make the rose look velvety soft.

I like this shot a lot. I like how focuses completely on th rose. The idea of taking a shot of an aged rose was very creative. The position of the rose is well placed. It is very good photo.

I really like this shot. The detail of the rose is very good. I like that there is only one main focus, being the rose. I like the color and texture of the rose. The rose looks very antique. I believe that a background would also take away focus from the rose.

The exposure of the photo is well taken. Because of the well focus of the rose in the photo it came to be my favorite.I also like the color of the rose it is very unique, not like all of the others. Makes the rose more impressive and interesting. Also the background of the rose is bit dull, but on the other hand the background does not take the main focus off. This photo also shows nature something important to the world. The mood of the photo might be a sad one, but it shows that nature has many ways to be shown. I also like it because it shows a fill in the frame kind off photo. Overall is like this photo for its exposure and well focus object.

This picture is so unique. I like how you can see every curve in the rose. Some technical features I think you used was aperture, to really get the rose the focus. An element of composition used here is filling the frame, and central subject matter. I get a romantic mood from this image. Very pretty!

Thanks for the comments dudes. For everyone commenting about the backround, I just wanna let you know that I'm well-aware (read underneath the photo), and I totally agree. About the "genaricness" of the shot, I took a picture of a rose a while ago and Myers told me to do something unique. While I understand that it's not the best angle, I haven't seen a bunch of dead HDR shots floating around, so that's what makes it unique. The lighting was also a problem for me, and this angle had the best lighting and let the most detail come out. Cropping the sides out it out of the question because the top will get drawn in too close. I agree that the halo isn't so cool, but hey, that's HDR. I really appreciate all the feedback you guys have left. Thanks!

I love the feel of this picture. The rose looks very vintagey. Even though the background is simple I like it. I think it adds more to the rose. I think you did an awesome job of using the rose as a single center of interest. There’s nothing else distracting the viewer from the rose. I also love the contrast of colors in the rose and the intensity of the reds. I say it’s a job well done!

I really like this photo. I like that there is nothing distracting in the background. If there was a different background, it would draw the focus from the flower. I love the colors of the rose.

This is such a pretty shot! I love love love it! The subtle background really goes nicely with the complexity of the flower. Its amazing how sharp of a focus the flower is in! It’s also a very unique color of the flower and I think that’s what I love most about it. It’s not the typical blood red rose, but instead this color is more vintage like. I think this is an incredible photo and you did a really good job!
